To the annual show 2020/2021
June 2021
Dear visitors! Students and associates of the School of Arts of the University of Nova Gorica invite you, as every year, to view our semester and annual production. Usually, we also invite you to socialize, experience, talk, exchange opinions. But after a year and a half of the covid-19 era, we must offer you an online exhibition again.
A year ago, I was writing about the community at the time of the corona virus, as we were surprised by a two-month lockdown when we couldn’t work live. We also dedicated quite a few tasks to this title. We believed it was just a short lockdown, but no, soon in the fall, when we had just met the new generation of students, we had to pull back into solitude again, plan one schedule for online working, another one for live work and of course, for just in case, for a hybrid implementation. Until the May Day holidays, we worked remotely with students. One month before the planned end of the academic year, we were finally able to launch a series of intensive practical workshops under special conditions and extend the academic year to June.
The students are exhausted, but I hope they are satisfied, too. Some of what needs to happen during the academic year beside the theoretical lectures and individual exercises was finally possible. Group work and field exercises with classmates, mentors, on locations. But again, we miss the common action of setting of the final exhibition. Why, you can read in my February introductory text, the reasons why this is important are, in fact, the same.
Fortunately, in the summer we are usually offered some opportunities to present our students work at a small exhibitions and festivals. This year, we placed a small selection of three semester online exhibitions in the newly created Center for Creative Practices, Xcenter in Nova Gorica. Following all the safety regulations, it opens on Tuesday, June 22 between 6pm and 9pm and is then on view every day between 11am and 5pm, until June 30 2021.
Some of this hustle and bustle, exhibition frenzy, will be experienced by some of the students for the first time. Some will go to Topolo Station on July 4, where their films from the dokufilm workshop will be shown. At the end of the summer, again at Galerija Salsaverde and Cinema Isola, in Izola.
This time, we were no longer particularly concerned with the ‘community at the time of the corona virus’. But this has been a part of our reality for the second year in a row, and whether you like it or not, it is here, even in student work, as it has become a part of our lives. A documentary workshop with one mentor in Rome and another in Edinburgh, with a few students in the Goriška region and individuals in various parts of Slovenia, Europe, the Balkans, Ukraine, Iran and Pakistan, lost the opportunity to work in film crews in the field. But it gained another experience of participants in different locations, in different cultures, working on a joint film. Photos, new media projects, animations. Life goes on. We want closeness, travel, team work. We do not want masks, tests and vaccines to become our new normal. However, all this is a part of life and is also reflected in the creative work of students.
You are warmly invited to join us!
